A few characters (noted below) upon the first gift of Ambrosia will give you a special item, called a Chthonic Companion, which is basically a summon ability which you can use a few times per run. When you give a character Nectar for the first time, they will give you a Keepsake, which is an item that you can equip to give you buffs during a run.
Gifting characters nectar unlocks their first few hearts, up until a certain point which requires completing their "favor" to unlock the remaining (usually 3) hearts. As a quick refresher, there are two items that you can gift characters with.
